Headaches can range from an occasional annoyance to something that interferes with work, concentration, sleep, and everyday activities. While headaches have many different causes, some are associated with muscle tension, neck pain, restricted neck movement, posture, or prolonged periods in the same position.

At Axis Chiropractic, we evaluate patients experiencing headaches in New Ulm and surrounding Southern Minnesota communities to determine whether there may be a musculoskeletal component to their symptoms and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

Yes. Certain headaches can originate from or be influenced by structures in the neck.

Patients may notice pain beginning around the upper neck or base of the skull and traveling toward the side or front of the head. Headaches may occur along with neck stiffness, muscle tension, or difficulty comfortably turning the head.

Long periods of computer work, driving, repetitive activity, and certain sleeping positions can also contribute to neck tension. Some patients notice their headaches becoming more frequent or noticeable as the workday progresses.

Not all headaches are the same, and identifying the pattern matters.

Tension-type headaches commonly produce pressure or aching around the head and may occur alongside muscle tension. Cervicogenic headaches originate from structures in the neck and can produce pain that travels into the head. Migraines are a different neurological condition and may include throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound.

Because different types of headaches require different approaches, we don't assume that every headache is caused by the neck.

We start by discussing your headache pattern: where the pain begins, how often it occurs, how long it lasts, what seems to trigger it, and whether you also experience neck pain or stiffness.

When examination findings suggest that the neck or surrounding musculoskeletal structures may be contributing to your symptoms, chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue treatment, exercises, or ergonomic recommendations may be appropriate.

For patients who spend much of their day at a computer or workstation, we may also discuss posture, monitor position, movement breaks, and other factors that could be contributing to neck tension.

Most headaches are not caused by a serious underlying condition, but certain symptoms require prompt medical attention.

Seek immediate medical evaluation for a sudden, extremely severe headache; a headache following significant head trauma; or a headache accompanied by fever and severe neck stiffness, confusion, fainting, seizures, significant weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, vision loss, or other sudden neurological symptoms.

A new or substantially different headache pattern should also be appropriately evaluated.

If chiropractic care isn't appropriate for your particular headache presentation, we'll recommend seeking the appropriate medical evaluation rather than treating a condition that falls outside our scope.
