Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization at Axis Chiropractic

 If you've ever seen a chiropractor or therapist using a small metal tool along a muscle or tendon, there's a good chance you were looking at Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, or IASTM.

At Axis Chiropractic, we use IASTM as one of our soft tissue treatment options for patients dealing with muscle and tendon discomfort, tightness, and movement limitations.

IASTM uses specially designed handheld instruments that are moved across the skin while applying controlled pressure to the tissues underneath.

The tools allow us to work very specifically over muscles, tendons, fascia, and other soft tissues. The amount of pressure and the area treated depend on your condition and comfort level.

IASTM may be incorporated into treatment for:

• Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
• Muscle strains and tightness
• Tendon-related problems
• Sports and overuse injuries
• Shoulder and knee problems
• Repetitive work injuries
• Areas with limited or uncomfortable movement

One of the areas where we commonly use IASTM is the foot and lower leg when treating plantar fasciitis.

This is usually what patients want to know.

You may feel pressure or a scraping sensation as the instrument moves across the treatment area. Certain spots may feel more sensitive than others, particularly when the tissues are already irritated.

Treatment shouldn't simply be a matter of applying as much pressure as possible. We adjust the technique based on the area being treated, your symptoms, and how you respond.

Sometimes, but we commonly use it as one part of a larger treatment plan.

Depending on the condition, IASTM may be combined with chiropractic adjustments, other soft tissue techniques, stretching, mobility work, or exercises.

For example, someone with plantar fasciitis may receive IASTM to the foot and lower leg along with mobility recommendations and changes to activities that are aggravating the heel.

The goal is to improve comfortable movement and help you return to your normal work, exercise, or recreational activities.
