Ultrasound Therapy at Axis Chiropractic, P.A.

 Therapeutic ultrasound may have the same name as the ultrasound used for medical imaging, but it serves a very different purpose.

Instead of creating an image, therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves delivered into the tissues through a small handheld applicator. At Axis Chiropractic, we may use ultrasound as an additional treatment option for certain muscle, tendon, and other soft tissue problems.

During treatment, a small amount of ultrasound gel is placed over the area being treated. A handheld applicator is then moved continuously across the skin.

The ultrasound unit produces sound waves that travel into the underlying tissues. Treatment settings can be adjusted depending on the area and the reason we're using it.

We may incorporate therapeutic ultrasound into care for certain:

• Muscle and soft tissue injuries
• Tendon-related problems
• Sports and overuse injuries
• Work-related injuries
• Areas of pain or restricted movement

Whether ultrasound makes sense depends on the condition we're treating.

Not much—and that's normal.

Most patients simply feel the applicator moving across their skin and may notice some warmth during treatment. A typical treatment only takes a few minutes.

Unlike EMS, therapeutic ultrasound doesn't normally produce tingling or muscle contractions.

Ultrasound isn't something every patient receives.

We use it selectively when we believe it may be a useful addition to the overall treatment plan. Depending on the condition, it may be combined with chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue treatment, mobility work, exercises, or other therapies.

For some injuries, another treatment may be more appropriate. That's why we evaluate the problem first rather than automatically using the same combination of therapies for everyone.
